Creating Special Memories

Autumn has arrived!

First, let me thank you for all your lovely emails of encouragement regarding my anemia! You all are the loveliest people. What a blessing.

I am sitting by the window that overlooks my walled garden. I marvel at the dahlias that are blooming. I planted several varieties and didn’t realize some of them get as large as shrubbery! I thought I had dug those up and moved them last fall. But no, I actually dug up the calla lilies and now have not only large dahlias, but a bumper crop of lilies.

This past weekend, my granddaughter and daughter-in-law went to our annual tea celebrating our birthdays. To my surprise, it was a Halloween-themed tea and the tearoom buzzed with excitement. The Windsor Court has a superb tearoom and is steeped in tradition, but today it was all about fun. It is amazing that they can maintain elegance and still have a themed party like this. Everyone was thrilled to see Maleficent singing and visiting the tables. All fun for all ages.

Memories. We all were creating memories. I think during this past two years of being separated it has made us all cherish time we have with family and friends. Perhaps we took for granted we would always have that freedom to go anywhere and visit. But Covid changed all that. We relied on memories to get us through times of loneliness and vowed to create as many new ones as soon as we could.

I cherish time with family and friends so much more. Every moment is important and should be treated that way. As we have opportunities, let’s step out and do something fun. Call more often, and always take photos when you can. Time is a precious gift.

  1. I too miss your posts. I’m saying prayers for your health.
We were at a family wedding awhile ago and just seeing family who we hadn’t seen in almost two years brought the longest hugs and much laughter and just overall gladness at being together again.
    Such good memories.
Please do more Ribbons in My Journals.
    I love your magazines.

  5. Dear Phyllis,
This brings back memories of my trip to Victoria with my 11-year old granddaughter. We stayed at the Empress Hotel and of course enjoyed tea there, as well as Butchart Gardens. What a wonderful trip! She turned 16 yesterday; those five years flew by so quickly. Every now and then photos from our trip will pop up on my phone and I relive those magical moments. We still have our precious times together, but having had the opportunity to introduce her to things that are special to me when she was so young will always hold a place in my heart.

  6. Happiest of birthdays to you Phyllis! And thank you for sharing the details of the precious memories you made celebrating with your loved ones. I hope this finds you feeling well. Your “Ribbon” newsletters have been missed!

  8. Happy Birthday to all of you! The tea looks wonderful.

Such true words about making lots of memories as this is what sustains us when we are apart. I also find myself returning to my Hoffman media books and magazines to savor moments at home.

    Hope you have continued healing.

  9. I have missed hearing from you. I am sorry that you are battling health issues & hope you will soon be well. It is so good to see us be able to participate in some of our cherished traditions. Our physical & mental health has deteriorated so much during this time of COVID. May we all appreciate each day & each other going forward.

  13. I have missed your Ribbon entries so much, Phyllis! I hope you continue to regain strength to do the things you love and to keep making memories with the people you cherish. The tea party sounds like a lovely way to celebrate birthdays.
    Please write again soon!!

  14. So happy to hear from you, and that you’re better. I have missed
“The Ribbon”. What a fun, but yet lovely event. Wild Strawberry by Wedgwood, one of our shared favorites, didn’t go unnoticed.
Blessings to you and your family.

  15. I have missed these posts. I had no idea you were dealing with Anemis, I am so sorry. Glad you are feeling some better. Was that posted? I also suffer from Anemia and recently found I will have it the rest of my life. So we look to the Lord, making happy memories to recall on our “ill” days. Autumn is the most beautiful of all the seasons. I don’t have good health and every Autumn I recall a line of Robert Frost “I have safely trodden underfoot the leaves of another year”. My favorite Poet! Blessings and cheer to you !

  16. I was so happy to see a “ribbon” in my email. I find I am becoming exasperated with so many short cuts people are taking; enjoyment is lessened. Thank you for your stories.
