The Ribbon in My Journal – Phyllis Hoffman DePiano

So Much to Celebrate

As you all know, I am not one to enjoy the inescapable heat of summer. Instead, I choose to find joy in the season with celebrations and gatherings. These summer celebrations are the inspiration for our newest Entertain & Celebrate special issues!

Within the pages of this special issue we asked Katie Jacobs, author of So Much to Celebrate, to share some of her best-kept secrets for successful hosting. I’d love to share with you a few of her tips!

Q: What is your biggest advice to anyone wanting to throw a party for the first time?

A: Your guests will feed off your energy. If you are relaxed and having a good time, so will they! Try to prepare as much in advance as possible so once everyone arrives, you too can enjoy the party.

Q: What is your go-to dish for last-minute gatherings?

A: My refrigerator is always stocked with things to throw together in a charcuterie board. I love giant platters of amazing cheese with lots of goodies (meat, fruit, nuts, bread, and crackers) to go with it. There is something for everyone, and it’s a great way to encourage guests to mingle and chat. Best part? Assembling a stunning fruit and cheese platter requires absolutely no cooking.

Q: What advice would you give to those wanting to make the most of their space during the summertime?

A: Outdoor entertaining is all about ambiance. You don’t have to have a fancy outdoor living space to host a special gathering. Some Italian streetlights hung from a tree, candlelit lanterns, and/or a fire pit make for a relaxed evening under the stars. For a daytime event, I love using a bubble machine, bright-colored beach towels, and potted plants with pops of color.
